Comprehensive Winter Service Information System


Within the framework of the project "UWIS", UBIMET has developed a novel comprehensive winter service weather information system for municipalities. Overall aims were to increase the safety and mobility of traffic participants, to mitigate the liability of the communities, to save gritting material and to optimise personnel and resource planning, as well as to decrease environmental impact due to grit.


The Austrian communities were involved in the development of the system by participating in several polls, where they also had the possibility to express their individual requirements for an information system for winter services. The online portal is an integral part of the comprehensive winter service information system. It provides daily forecasts in the form of pdf-sheets and street maps with potential risks marked in different colours. The user can also make his or her own settings regarding transfer method (email, fax, sms), transfer times and warning levels (the threshold above which the customer receives warnings).
