UBIMET providing motorsport-tailored forecasts in real time

The 2014 FIA Formula One World Championship® begins in Melbourne this week (13-16 March) with a new weather forecaster – UBIMET, an internationally recognised leader in meteorology and severe weather warnings. UBIMET will be delivering accurate, motorsport tailored forecasts in real time enabling each team to make race critical decisions throughout the Melbourne championship event.

UBIMET, which provides tailor made solutions and high precision forecasts, severe weather warnings and weather information, has a long term contract with the FIA to provide weather forecasts for all Formula One races and teams from the current season on.

Formula One is a race of marginal gains and UBIMET will supply information that enables the teams to develop race strategies based on environmental factors such as change in wind speed, wind direction, air pressure, temperature and humidity so the cars can be tuned to maximise the conditions on the day, as well as also ensure the safety and security of all drivers.

UBIMET uses its own high resolution numerical forecast models in combination with manual forecasts and data gained from its own on-site weather stations and radar’s at each circuit in order to supply precise forecasts designed specifically for motorsports. The ‘NowCasting’ service of ultra short-term forecasting is also provided to meet the needs of industries such as construction, insurance and energy.

The forecaster will have a team of experienced and specially trained meteorologists and technicians working onsite for all 19 Formula One circuits in 19 countries – starting with the 2014 Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.

There will be multiple weather stations at various points on the F1 circuits, which will measure meteorological and motorsport relevant parameters in real time. Quantity and quality of data feeding into bespoke weather models analysed by UBIMET’s meteorologists onsite will ensure the highest prediction accuracy.

UBIMET’s highly sophisticated online portal will enable teams to make immediate decisions according to the specific weather situation. And this will be available on desktop, tablet and mobile devices to make it even easier for the teams.

Advantages of UBIMET’s weather services:

  • The quantity and quality of data collected in combination with manual forecasts by meteorologists onsite will ensure the highest prediction accuracy.

  • Multiple weather stations on various points of the tracks, measuring meteorological and motorsport relevant parameters in real time which are updated every minute.

  • Highly sophisticated online portal, enabling teams to make immediate, race critical decisions according to weather situation (available on desktop, tablet and mobile devices).
