Formula 1: Will the second race be sunny too?

A pleasant temperature of around 19°C welcomed the Formula 1 drivers to Melbourne, Australia on March 15. This weekend the Formula 1 - cars fight for the victory in Sepang, Malaysia. UBIMET’s meteorologists are already at the circuit. Will the weather provide any surprises this weekend?

The first races of the season are always challenging for everybody”, says Steffen Dietz, meteorologist at UBIMET, “we are relieved that the weather in Melbourne was stable with just single clouds occasionally disturbing the sunshine.”

The race teams, the organizers, the visitors – it is important for everyone to know what the weather will be like.

Since the southeast Asian state has a tropical-moist rainforest climate, the weather in Malaysia is more unsettled. For March, the statistics show an average of about 22 days with rain. Even though the rain showers are usually not long lasting, they are often intense.

Optimized weather forecasts – even for difficult climate zones

So the weather conditions in Malaysia are hardly comparable with the conditions in Australia. Beside the rain, the teams and drivers also have to handle the high temperature.

So the feedback from the teams and the Fédération International de l’Automobile (FIA) is especially important in this area.

Thanks to the close cooperation with the FIA and the teams, UBIMET has been able to optimize their already precise weather forecasts even further: “The feedback from all participants is always important for us”, says Dietz.

Around one ton of equipment

After Lewis Hamilton's clear victory in Melbourne, the Formula 1 extravaganza arrives at Sepang, Malaysia. The UBIMET team is also already on site. The team – and around one ton of equipment: “Our gear includes weather radar, track sensors, several servers, etc.”, says Dietz.

With the help of all this technology, Steffen Dietz and the UBIMET team are watching over the weather conditions in Malaysia. On Sunday more stable conditions are expected, but on Friday and Saturday, thundery showers are possible.
