Managing Rugby League World Cup 2017 Weather Risks

40 Matches, 14 World Cup Venues, 3 Countries, 2 Weather Policies, 1 Provider

Rugby League is arguably the toughest and most physically demanding of all team sports. Every fan knows about the danger of a high/spear tackle in the game, but very few spend time thinking about the risk of lightning or extreme heat. Thankfully all players, officials, fans and organizers are in very safe hands thanks to the cooperation between RLWC2017 and UBIMET.

UBIMET was selected to provide weather services for RLWC2017 and will assist organizers to implement both the lightning and heat policy. UBIMET has a proven track record in providing the sports industry with high-precision meteorology from F1, PGA Australia, Football Federation Australia, MotoGP to name a few. The reason why major event organizers choose UBIMET is due to the exceptional service offered. UBIMET combines highly precise weather data (100m resolution possible) produced by the unique “RACE” model with a patented, global, ultra-high precision lighting detection network and displays all of this data in a simple to read online platform known as the “Weather Cockpit”. UBIMET takes this to the next level and simplifies the decision-making process by implementing policy thresholds into the Weather Cockpit and applying the traffic light system to indicate danger, a potential for danger and all clear. Should they be needed, specialist meteorologists will be on call 24/7 to provide support throughout the whole tournament.
